Been here a couple of times, and it's in a great spot for me in midtown. The storefront looks charmingly antiquated, but once you're inside it's way more spacious than you'd guess — it goes deep, and the good stuff keeps going all the way to the back. It's mainly a tabletop hobby shop, but there's a solid spread of board games and comics in the back, plus a wide TCG selection. The guy at the front counter is extremely friendly. I've had a few conversations with him and he's knowledgeable and happy to point you in the right direction. Pricing isn't cheap, but compared to other Manhattan TCG shops it's actually a bit better. If you're coming from Jersey you'll pay a small premium — still fair for what you get. The shop's been around since the 1970s, which makes it one of the oldest tabletop stores still in business, maybe the oldest. Wild when you think about how different midtown was 50 years ago. Surviving that long in this neighborhood is legendary in its own right, and it clearly has a reputation — every visit I see tourists loading up on stuff. Good spot, good service, easy to get to. Worth checking out.

Unique store carrying a lot of vintage games and toys. Feels like it’s out of a 1980s movie. Tons of classics and decent games too.

I visit a lot of board game and hobby shops across the country every year and it’s always nice to see one that doesn’t max out its Games Workshop inventory and doesn’t live or die by the number of MTG packs it sells. CS does offer a considerable number of board games, as well as a decent share of GW and ADD products, even if the inventory is a little uneven. Still, there really aren’t many options in NYC so look to CS for your board gaming needs.

This game store has been around FOREVER. Great selection in a central location. I always came here to get dice and occasional D&D books. Staff was always friendly and helpful. They have a cool case with painted figures from numerous games. If you are on the area I definitely recommend.

If you’re even remotely into Magic the Gathering, board games, RPGs, miniatures, or anything in the tabletop world, The Compleat Strategist is an absolute gem in NYC. The selection is fantastic—wall-to-wall shelves packed with everything from classic strategy games to the latest tabletop releases. Whether you’re hunting for a niche RPG supplement, a new board game to break out with friends, or miniatures and accessories, this place delivers. It’s the kind of store where you walk in for one thing and leave with three more you didn’t even know you needed. What really sets it apart, though, is the staff. Everyone is genuinely friendly, approachable, and clearly knows their stuff. They’re happy to make recommendations, answer questions, or just talk games without any pressure. It feels welcoming whether you’re a seasoned player or just getting started. And for Manhattan, the prices are surprisingly reasonable. You’re getting a true specialty shop experience without feeling like you’re paying a premium just for the location. Bottom line: This is one of those rare stores that still feels authentic—like a true hub for the gaming community. If you’re in NYC, it’s absolutely worth a visit.
