How to prepare for your first TCG tournament

First-time nerves are normal. With a bit of preparation, a tournament becomes something you'll want to do again.

Know the format before you arrive

Every tournament defines a format: which cards are allowed, how many copies of each, and which play zones apply. Before you register, confirm what it is and check that your deck follows the rules. A deck that's out of format can cost you the round before it even starts.

Prepping your deck

Show up with your deck already built, with matching sleeves (same color and size), and with life counters or trackers if the game uses them. Keep a copy of your decklist or card list handy, since some tournaments ask for it.

Table etiquette

  • Greet your opponent and shuffle your deck where they can see it.
  • If you're unsure about a rule, call a judge — that's part of the tournament, not an inconvenience.
  • Handle cards carefully. Never bend them or set them on the floor.
  • When the game ends, record the result and leave the table clean.

Arrive early

Tournaments usually close registration a few minutes before start time. Arrive early to check in, review your deck, and find your seat. And remember, losing isn't the end — in most formats, every player plays several rounds.
